About This Clinic

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic is a specialty clinic within UT Health Austin Pediatric Neurosciences at Dell Children’s, a clinical partnership between Dell Children’s Medical Center and UT Health Austin.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic diagnoses, treats, and manages the care of children and adolescents with neurological conditions that may benefit from surgical treatment, such as brain and spine tumors, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, movement disorders, spina bifida, Chiari and syringomyelia, and vascular disorders, including moyamoya and arteriovenous malformations. We offer expertise in cerebrovascular surgery, cervical spine surgery, epilepsy surgery, traumatic brain and spine injury surgery, and tumor surgery.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic care team is comprised of nationally recognized physicians with highly specialized expertise in the surgical management of brain and spine disorders. Our neurosurgeons also participate in many of our multidisciplinary specialty centers that focus on specific complex populations. If your child has a condition that aligns with one of our specialty centers, we will coordinate care for your child with a specialist in that area. We can also facilitate appointments with any other neuroscience specialty clinic, such as the Pediatric Neurology Clinic, Pediatric Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic, Pediatric Neuropsychology Clinic, and Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic. With access to expert staff and advanced technology for treating both acute and chronic neurological conditions, we provide a wide range of services, from evaluation, testing, and diagnosis to surgical treatment, disease management, rehabilitation, and more, to give patients and their families the best quality of life.

Treatment Approach

The Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic care team offers the most up-to-date care that begins with a thorough evaluation in the clinic and includes a compassionate and informed discussion about the best approach to management and/or surgical intervention for your child’s neurological condition. By focusing on the overall health of patients, our team strongly believes in the inclusion of the family in medical and surgical decision making and encourages discussions and considerations about functional and quality of life outcomes. We work with you to understand your child’s history as well as their current concerns and design a treatment and/or follow-up plan that is specific to your goals and needs. Our diagnostic and treatment capabilities within the Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic are aligned with state-of-the-art neurosurgical care and include 3T MRI, MRI, intraoperative MRI (iMRI), robotic surgery, three-dimensional stereo-EEG, functional MRI (fMRI), magnetoencephalography (MEG), MR spectroscopy, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Our seamless affiliation with Dell Children’s Medical Center also allows us to offer the highest level of expertise across both inpatient and outpatient settings to enhance treatment precision and improve our understanding of your child’s condition.

Patients are cared for by a dedicated multidisciplinary care team, meaning your child will benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists across a variety of disciplines. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric neurosurgeons have extensive experience in maximizing medical and functional outcomes in children and adolescents of all ages, from birth through young adulthood, with surgical needs and work alongside a team of pediatric specialists, including nurses, advanced practice providers, social workers, child life specialists, and more, providing unparalleled care for patients and their families every step of the way.

We also collaborate closely with referring physicians, pediatricians, and other partners in the community, including pediatric experts in neuro-oncology, spina bifida, craniofacial abnormalities, spasticity, and more, to schedule and coordinate any additional care services your child may need. Our specialists can provide input and guidance for areas of your child’s life that are affected by their medical condition by assisting with school services, school re-entry, socialization, and engagement in physical activities. All of these areas impact your child’s quality of life and are an integral part of our mission at the Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic.
