About This Center
The Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center is a clinical partnership between Dell Children’s Medical Center and UT Health Austin, the clinical practice of the Dell Medical School.
The Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center, housed at Dell Children’s Medical Center, diagnoses, treats, and manages the care of children and adolescents in need of a kidney transplant. Our team is comprised of highly specialized pediatric transplant providers who work with patients and their families to develop individualized treatment plans. We use the latest research-proven methodologies to successfully treat pediatric patients in need of an organ transplant.
The Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center has received approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide kidney transplant services.
The Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center is committed to providing a multifaceted continuum of care, coordinating patient care with referring physicians and other care team members to ensure patients receive the highest level of specialized care and experience a seamless transition from pediatric to adult care. For patients 18 years of age and older, Abdominal Transplant services are also available through a clinical partnership between Ascension Seton and UT Health Austin.
The Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center care team is capable of treating complex pediatric transplant cases and offers a range of expertise to ensure the best possible health outcomes. Patients are cared for by a dedicated multidisciplinary care team, meaning your child will benefit from the expertise of multiple specialists across a variety of disciplines. Our board-certified and fellowship-trained transplant surgeons have extensive experience in organ transplantation and work alongside a team of pediatric transplant experts, including transplant nephrologists, transplant coordinators, nurses, advanced practice providers, social workers, psychologists, child life specialists, dietitians, pharmacists, and more, providing unparalleled care for patients and their families every step of the way.
We collaborate with our colleagues at the Dell Medical School and The University of Texas at Austin to utilize the latest research, diagnostic, and treatment techniques, allowing us to identify new surgical techniques and therapies to improve transplant care.
To be considered for a kidney transplant, your child must first undergo a thorough medical evaluation, which can take up to several months to complete and may involve a variety of tests, including a kidney ultrasound, chest x-ray, echocardiogram (echo), and electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) as well as laboratory testing, physical exams, and more. These test results allow the Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center care team to determine your child’s candidacy for receiving a transplant. Upon completion of testing, all results will be reviewed with you and your family.
The Pediatric Abdominal Transplant Center is comprised of highly specialized pediatric transplant providers who are experienced in providing specific services needed to treat pediatric transplant patients. Depending on your child’s needs, a team is built around you and your family to ensure you are receiving the most personalized care.
